What to check when buying a used forklift

Appearances mislead with used forklifts. A freshly painted machine can look right and hide problems underneath, while a scuffed one can be mechanically sound. These are the points worth checking:

  • Hours run: the equivalent of mileage. If the hours look low on an old machine, that needs explaining too.
  • Mast and chains: stretched chains, a bent mast or rubbing marks. Mast repairs are expensive.
  • Hydraulic leaks: raise and lower the forks and look for weeping oil and cracked hoses.
  • Fork condition: thinning tips, cracks or bending are a direct safety risk.
  • Tyres: wear on cushion tyres, sidewall condition on pneumatics. Tyre replacement is an overlooked cost.
  • Battery age on electric machines: the battery is one of the most expensive parts. Its age and ability to hold charge drive much of the price.
  • Service history: the gap between a maintained machine and a neglected one shows up within a few years.

Simple rule: do not decide without seeing the machine running and testing it under load. A forklift that behaves unloaded can show problems with weight on the forks.

What sets the price

Two machines of the same capacity can sit far apart on price. These are the items that create the gap:

FactorEffect on price
Hours runPrice falls as hours rise, though good maintenance narrows the gap
Age and modelSpare parts availability feeds straight into value
CapacityHigher capacity costs more, but has a narrower buyer pool
Power typeOn electric machines, battery condition alone can be decisive
Mast type and heightTriplex masts and higher lift raise the value
Extra equipmentSide shift, rotators and cabs are reflected in the price

New or used

A new forklift comes with a warranty and a known history, and will not surprise you with costs in its early years. Against that, the upfront price is high and it starts losing value the moment you buy it.

A used machine lets the same budget reach a higher capacity. Pick the right one and it runs for years; pick the wrong one and repair bills eat the saving quickly. The decision depends less on budget than on how hard you will work the machine.

Buying versus renting

If the forklift will run all year and regularly, buying works out cheaper over time. If use is concentrated in certain periods or adds up to relatively few days, renting comes out ahead, because servicing, insurance and idle time stay off your books.

If you are unsure, renting first and watching your actual usage is a sensible route. Once the pattern settles you can move to buying. For the rental side, see the forklift rental page.

Selling your forklift

If you have a machine sitting idle or one that is oversized for your work, we buy. Useful details: make and model, year, hours run, capacity, power type and any known faults.

Leaving out a known fault does not change the outcome, since it shows up on inspection anyway. Mentioning it up front just makes the process quicker.
